Evering Road is a mile-long Victorian stretch in North-East London.

Several blocks are sheltered by trees that have grown taller than their 4-storey townhouses.

Since moving here I’ve always wondered about its past.

Evering Road

Residential and light on traffic, it offers respite from the busy high streets of Dalston and Upper Clapton on either end.

Walks along the pavement are occasionally interrupted by friendly cats emerging from the brickwork. After dark, it’s the screaming foxes that have the run of the place.

How much is known about those who called this place home, or inhabited these lands long before any streets existed?
